Mini Figures
I drew these minature figures to scatter around my map of Trafalgar Square: If you look closely, you can just see them. As Trafalgar Square is usually one of the busiest areas of London, the original piece looked a little empty without any people: The final piece benefitted from the extra life the scattered people [...]
Drawings of Paphos.
I’ve been clearing a few cupboards lately and discovered a lot of pieces of work I had forgotten about. Here’s three drawings of Paphos from last summer. The first is a drawing of Paphos town centre; I drew some of the back streets. The idea was to represent the half finished developments that you can [...]
Two drawings of Neal’s Yard
I love Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden so I’ve drawn it a number of times. Here’s two very different illustrations of it:
Castle on a Hill
Over the weekend I decided to try another drawing with my Letraset promarkers. I was thinking about drawing a castle on a hill and used St Michael’s Mount as the basis for the hill, as I discovered a rather nice photo of the island – with a ship in the foreground – in an old [...]
Manchester City Centre
Another work in progress; this time slightly less resolved than the drawings of Covent Garden, Ponte Vecchio and New York. feel this image is a little flat and would probably benefit from some darkened windows and shady areas to some of the buildings, but thought it best to scan the piece at this stage to [...]
Vlad Dracul
Here’s a drawing I did of Vlad Dracul which is featured in the current issue of Ballad Of. This illustration reflects my love for all thing relating to the eccentric Wallachian prince, a topic I explored in a little more detail here.
Sketches for The Dawn Herald
Here’s a couple of recent sketches for two of the illustrations I’m making for The Dawn Herald by L.B. Mara:
Perspective Tutorial for Professional Artist Magazine
Below is one of the illustrations I produced to accompany a tutorial in perspective drawing for the excellent Professional Artist Magazine: And here are my spreads from the piece, which was laid out beautifully by their designer. The magazine had some fascinating articles in it, including a great piece about The Aesthetic Power of Geometric [...]
Line Drawing of Split in Croatia
A few weeks ago I was in the mood to draw some rooftops so I decided to draw Split in Croatia. I’ve never been there, but it looks incredibly charming and has exactly the sort of landscape I love best, jumbly rooftops with a harbour in the background:
Two more pencil drawings of London
I find London a fascinating place to draw; the layout of the city means that you can view the same buildings in a variety of arrangements. These two drawings both show St.Paul’s Cathedral, but from opposite sides of the river and from different viewpoints. It makes drawing a definitive London skyline impossible; part of the [...]
Pencil Drawing of London Skyline
I can’t say exactly why I work in pen and ink so much, although my fondness for this medium was certainly influenced by using a Rotring Rapidograph during a brief stint as an archaeological illustrator in 2005. So this is the first pencil drawing I have made for a while; it still needs some work, [...]
Illustrated Map in Progress
Here’s a recent commission at the halfway stage of colouring. The colour is too wintery at this point, but I loved the feel of the piece and so I scanned it. I’ll probably use similar tones in a later piece.
Map of Ayii Anargyri Spa Resort in Miliou
I was commissioned by the Ayii Anargyri Spa resort in Miliou to draw a map of their hotel and the surrounding village, incorporating local points of interest into the map.
Bird’s Eye view of Brighton
This is a work in progress and shows Brighton town centre in 3/4 bird’s eye view. I also started to add some hand written street names, which I rather like the look of:
Panoramic View of London
360 degree panoramic illustration of the City of London. Pen and Ink on Paper. 2010
Watercolour Illustrated Map of Trafagar Square
This illustration shows Trafalgar Square in bird’s eye view and was made in 2010. Watercolour & Pen and Ink on Paper.
Mont Saint-Michel
With this drawing of Mont St-Michel in Normandy, I decided to approach it in a slightly different way. I used a waterbased Stabilo pen and washed sections of it to give a less stark line than I usually make. After several months of rather precise drawing projects I rather like working a little more freely:
Sunrise Part 1
My fondness for early morning drawing tends to reach a crescendo at this time of year, so I decided that a series of work based around sunrises would be an interesting idea to pursue. I drew this piece in felt tip last weekend and have altered it a little on photoshop to see which alternatives [...]
Another London Skyline
I quite liked the idea of taking a more graphic approach to this subject and may try a version in colour at some point.
Early Morning
One positive aspect of the frequent power cuts we are experiencing in Cyprus at the moment is that there are times where I am forced to stop working and to go outside and draw. Not that I need much prodding to do this anyway. Here is a view of my village, Mesogi, which I worked [...]
Early morning sketches
Over the summer season, a recurring theme in my work is early morning drawings. During August, it’s too hot to sit outside once the sun is out and so I often go out onto the balcony for coffee at 5 Am. I get a little frustrated by these pieces; there’s not a whole lot of [...]
Brighton
Here is a big jumbled up picture of Brighton (click on the image to enlarge it): There’s a ton more work to be done on this piece, I feel it needs some labels and some more easily identifiable landmarks, but it was something I couldn’t get out of my head and when that feeling occurs, [...]
